Staff Scientist, Data Science Core
Hui Cheng, Ph.D., has led NIDCD’s Data Science Core since 2019 and became a staff scientist at NIDCD in 2023. Trained in statistics and bioinformatics, Dr. Cheng is interested in gaining novel insights into auditory processes and associated diseases using integrated data analysis, which she explores through collaborations with NIDCD intramural scientists and researchers beyond NIDCD. She has co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed articles in both the hearing and cancer fields. In addition, she supports NIDCD in its current data management and sharing efforts.
Dr. Cheng holds a Ph.D. in genetics, bioinformatics, and computational biology from Virginia Tech; master’s degrees in both statistics and biochemistry from Virginia Tech; and a B.S. in microbiology from Shanxi University, China. After a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. John Tsang at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), she completed her postdoctoral research with Dr. Carter Van Waes at NIDCD, where she focused on genomics characterization of head and neck cancer cell lines and contributed to several collaborative cancer genomic projects through The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program.
