During a live webinar at noon Eastern on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) Extramural Research Training Officer Alberto Rivera-Rentas, Ph.D., will discuss training opportunities for postdoctoral applicants. Dr. Rivera-Rentas will provide details about the programs, discuss tips for writing a successful application, and answer participant questions.

The goal of the NIDCD’s postdoctoral training program is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists is available to address the nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. Opportunities include individual fellowships and awards that support the transition from postdoctoral fellow to independent investigator. Note: Fellowships are available to support the training of pre- and postdoctoral scientists, but this webinar will only cover postdoctoral opportunities.

Webinar participants will learn about the following topics:

  • NIDCD’s training mission.
  • The life cycle of an application.
  • The roles of the applicant, mentor(s), institution, program official, and others.

During a Q&A session at the end of the webinar, Dr. Rivera-Rentas will answer pre-submitted and live questions.

The webinar will cover these postdoctoral research training opportunities:

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship (Parent F32)

  • Support: This award gives basic and clinical postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to receive up to 3 years of support during their postdoctoral research training in NIDCD mission areas.
  • Program Focus: This program focuses on highly promising postdoctoral candidates.

NIDCD Research Dissertation Fellowship for Au.D. Audiologists (F32)

  • Support: This program enables promising Au.D. holders to obtain research training from faculty sponsors while conducting dissertation research leading to a research doctorate in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences. The program provides up to 3 years of support for dissertation research training.
  • Program Focus: This program focuses on Au.D. audiologists who are Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) candidates and who have identified a dissertation research project and sponsor(s).

BRAIN Initiative Fellows: Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship (F32)

  • Support: This award gives postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to receive up to 3 years of support during their postdoctoral research training in NIDCD mission areas.
  • Program Focus: This program focuses on highly promising postdoctoral candidates receiving research training in areas related to the BRAIN Initiative.

NIH Pathway to Independence Award (Parent K99/R00 Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

  • Support: This award gives up to 5 years of support to outstanding senior postdoctoral investigators in NIDCD research areas who are ready to complete the transition to becoming independent investigators.
  • Program Focus: This program focuses on research that does not involve leading a clinical trial.

NIH Pathway to Independence Award (Parent K99/R00 Independent Clinical Trial Required)

  • Support: This award gives up to 5 years of support to outstanding senior postdoctoral investigators in NIDCD research areas who are ready to complete the transition to becoming independent investigators.
  • Program Focus: This program focuses on research that involves leading a clinical trial.

Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00 - Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

  • Support: This award gives up to 5 years of support to outstanding senior postdoctoral investigators in NIDCD research areas who are ready to complete the transition to becoming independent investigators.
  • Program Focus: This program focuses on postdoctoral fellows from diverse backgrounds who have research plans that do not involve leading a clinical trial.

Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00 - Independent Clinical Trial Required)

  • Support: This award gives up to 5 years of support to outstanding senior postdoctoral investigators in NIDCD research areas who are ready to complete the transition to becoming independent investigators.
  • Program Focus: This program focuses on postdoctoral fellows from diverse backgrounds who have research plans that involve leading a clinical trial.

BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00 Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

  • Support: This award gives up to 5 years of support to outstanding senior postdoctoral investigators in NIDCD research areas who are ready to complete the transition to becoming independent investigators.
  • Program Focus: This program focuses on postdoctoral fellows from diverse backgrounds who have research related to the BRAIN Initiative that does not involve leading a clinical trial.

BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00 Independent Clinical Trial Required)

  • Support: This award gives up to 5 years of support to outstanding senior postdoctoral investigators in NIDCD research areas who are ready to complete the transition to becoming independent investigators.
  • Program Focus: This program focuses on postdoctoral fellows from diverse backgrounds who have research related to the BRAIN Initiative that involves leading a clinical trial.

Participants are encouraged to submit questions by emailing them to NIDCDinfo@nidcd.nih.gov in advance of the webinar. Questions should be sent by Wednesday, March 8, 2023, and will be addressed in the Q&A session at the end of the webinar.

Captions will be available on both Zoom and the NIH videocast website. American Sign Language interpreting services are available upon request. Individuals who need interpreting services and/or other reasonable accommodations to participate in this event should contact Tanji Johnson by March 6 to ensure interpreter availability.
