Samah Jafari, M.D., oversees extramural clinical trials fostering the advancement of NIDCD’s core mission. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College in applied mathematics with a concentration in biophysics with applications in human physiology and mechanisms of disease. She earned a medical doctorate from Harvard Medical School, with a certificate from the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program. For her M.D. thesis, she worked on modeling of crossbridge muscle mechanics and the role of smooth muscle in the mechanism of reactive airway disease. At the University of Massachusetts Medical School, she completed a residency in internal medicine, followed by a human subject research fellowship in the neural control of the upper airway, the coordination of breathing and swallowing, and mechanisms of aspiration.
