Support for New and Early Stage Investigators
The NIDCD has established procedures and funding policies to ensure that adequate numbers of New Investigators and Early Stage Investigators (ESIs) are supported. Under these policies, an applicant's status as a New Investigator or ESI is one of the criteria used in funding decisions made by the Institute. NIDCD staff and NDCD Advisory Council members are encouraged to identify and give special consideration for funding to New Investigators and ESIs. In addition, R01 grants to New Investigators and ESIs are generally reduced less than other NIDCD-funded R01s.
The NIDCD has a history of encouraging the development of New Investigators and ESIs. The NIDCD offered a Small Grant (R03) Program from the early 1990s through 2015. In December 2015, this program was replaced by the Early Career Research (ECR) Award (R21), which is specifically designed to support the basic and clinical research of scientists who are in the early stages of establishing an independent research career. This award may be used to support individuals transitioning from postdoctoral status to their first independent research position.
