NIDCD Special Emphasis Panel

The Panel advises the Director, NIH, and the Director, NIDCD, on research grant and cooperative agreement applications and contract proposals relating to the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, and language.

Authority

Established January 26, 1992, by the Director, NIH, pursuant to Section 402(b)(6) of the Public Health Service Act, as amended (42 U.S.C. 282(b)(6)). This Panel is governed by the provisions of Public Law 92-463, as amended (5 U.S.C. Appendix 2).

Structure

Members, including the Chair, are selected on an "as needed" basis in response to specific applications to be reviewed. Approximately 200 reviewers are used each year. Members are selected from various fields of biomedical research. Members of the NIH Reviewers Reserve or chartered HHS advisory committees may serve on the panel if their expertise is required. Members are designated to serve for individual meetings rather than appointed for a fixed term.

Function

Advises the Director, NIH, and the Director, NIDCD, regarding research grant and cooperative agreement applications and contract proposals, relating to the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, and language.

Meetings

Meetings of the Panels are held as necessary (approximately 21 times per year) as determined by the Designated Federal Official (DFO) who also approves the agenda. A Government official is present at all meetings.
