October Is National Audiology Awareness Month and National Protect Your Hearing Month
According to the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), October is National Audiology Awareness Month and National Protect Your Hearing Month. AAA is dedicated to increasing public awareness of audiology and the importance of hearing protection.
An audiologist is a health care professional trained to evaluate and rehabilitate people with hearing loss and related disorders, including balance disorders and tinnitus. Over 36 million American adults have some degree of hearing loss and over half of them are younger than age 65.
Recently, NIDCD launched a national public education campaign called It’s a Noisy Planet. Protect Their Hearing. Noisy Planet targets parents and tweens, kids between the ages of 8 and 12, with messages about the causes and prevention of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).
Check us out on the Web to learn about the Noisy Planet campaign, the signs of hearing loss, and how you can protect yourself and others from NIHL. You can read NIDCD’s science-based fact sheets on hearing loss in print and online in English and Spanish.
