From Data Sets to Data Platforms to Data Ecosystems: The Emerging Landscape of Collaborative Cross-Disease Discovery and Accelerated Clinical Translation

On Wednesday, October 25, in a hybrid lecture open to NIH staff, extramural researchers, and the public, Adam Resnick, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Data-Driven Discovery in Biomedicine at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, will deliver a talk titled “From Data Sets to Data Platforms to Data Ecosystems: The Emerging Landscape of Collaborative Cross-Disease Discovery and Accelerated Clinical Translation.” The presentation is part of the NIDCD Director’s Seminar Series: Advancing the Science of Communication to Improve Lives.

The past five years have witnessed transformational changes in data-driven resources supported by NIH. These changes have been underpinned by the exponential growth of multimodal large-scale omics datasets that require new collaborative cloud-based platform infrastructure, policies, and interoperability frameworks to advance discoverability and clinical translation. Platform-enabled growth and scaled computation have been accompanied by fundamental changes in how data are used and accessed in both basic and clinical scientific research and in decision-support and precision-based care.

NIH programs such as the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program and the INvestigation of Co-occurring conditions across the Lifespan to Understand Down syndromE (INCLUDE) Project have served as proving grounds for such cloud-based technologies and their application in cross-disease research. They have also supported the development of broader federated ecosystems like the NIH Cloud Platform Interoperability (NCPI) Effort.

Dr. Resnick will review the lessons learned through such initiatives and upcoming advancements that seek to harness the promise of machine learning and artificial intelligence to support and improve personalized care. Following Dr. Resnick’s presentation, a moderated discussion will be held with invited NIH scientists.

The NIDCD Director’s Seminar Series features next-generation research that advances the science of hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, and language. Seminar topics are designed to align with the themes and priorities of the 2023-2027 NIDCD Strategic Plan, including innovations with the potential to improve the lives of people with hearing loss and communication disorders.

The series of annual lectures is open to all NIH staff, contractors, and trainees; the extramural community; and other interested public groups and individuals.

About the Speaker

Adam Resnick, Ph.D., is the Director of the Center for Data-Driven Discovery in Biomedicine (D3b) at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where he is responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team to build and support a scalable, patient-focused healthcare and educational discovery ecosystem to accelerate discovery and clinical translation for all children. The D3b Center is home to more than 100 researchers and staff comprising trans-disciplinary teams that span clinical and biospecimen research, molecular diagnosis, clinical trials, data analytics and bioinformatics, and software and cloud-based data-driven infrastructure development in support of collaborative, multi-institutional platform-supported pediatric research. Pediatric brain tumors have served as key areas of focus for D3b’s cross-disease projects seeking to elucidate the molecular and genetic underpinnings of disease in an effort to identify and develop targeted therapies through clinical translation and to define prevention approaches and personalized treatments that minimize harm to the developing child.

Dr. Resnick’s efforts extend beyond CHOP to his role as Scientific Chair for several consortia-based efforts, including the Children’s Brain Tumor Network and the Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium. He has served on the National Advisory Child Health and Human Development (NACHHD) Council, which advises NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and as a consultant for a number of NIH data platform and resource initiatives. He currently leads the ongoing development efforts of the NIH Common Fund-supported Gabriella Miller Kids First Data Resource Center and the INvestigation of Co-occurring conditions across the Lifespan to Understand Down syndromE (INCLUDE) Project’s Data Hub—platforms supporting large-scale data sharing and collaborative discovery in the areas of pediatric cancers, structural birth defects, and Down syndrome.

Prior to arriving at CHOP, Dr. Resnick earned dual bachelor’s degrees in neuroscience and in English and literature from the University of Florida. He completed a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University.
