This image shows and labels the parts of the body involved in speech and voice production, including the lungs, trachea (windpipe), esophagus (food channel), larynx (voice box), vocal folds, tongue, lips, teeth, soft palate, hard palate, and nasal cavity. Three smaller illustrations show that vocal folds are closed when we swallow; that air causes vocal folds to vibrate between open and closed positions when we talk; and that vocal folds are open when we breathe quietly.
