NIH Director’s Opportunity for Research in Five Thematic Areas (RC4)

Closed: No longer accepting applications.

Release Date: December 28, 2009
Application Receipt Date: March 15, 2010

This funding announcement (RFA-OD-10-005) is supported by the NIH under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“Recovery Act” or “ARRA”). This FOA will be administered by the Office of the Director of the NIH. Awards will be administered by the participating Institutes and Centers.

Under the Recovery Act, the NIH has established a program entitled “NIH Director’s Opportunity for Research in Five Thematic Areas.” This program will support projects that address research endeavors in specific areas that will benefit from significant three-year funds without the expectation of continued NIH funding beyond this period. The research supported by the program should have high short-term impact, and a high likelihood of enabling growth and investment in biomedical research and development, public health, and health care delivery.

NIDCD Specific Information:
NIDCD is very supportive of the thematic areas noted in the NIH Director’s Opportunity for Research in Five Thematic Areas (RC4) solicitation. However, because we have already committed the vast majority of our ARRA allocation, it is likely that funds to support any RC4 application focused in our mission areas would come only from the Office of the Director, NIH. That office plans to set aside approximately $100 million for this mechanism, which is expected to fund a total of 40 to 50 three-year projects across all of the NIH Institutes. Should researchers in NIDCD’s mission areas decide not to pursue this RC4 funding opportunity, we encourage the future submission of applications in these thematic areas utilizing the standard funding mechanisms and receipt dates.
