V. Report of the Acting Director, DHC
Dr. Judith Cooper
Dr. Judith Cooper, Acting Director of the Division of Human Communication, reported on several activities of that division.
Staff Changes
Dr. Cooper commented on the loss of several members from the Division's staff. Both Dr. Ralph Naunton and Dr. Jack Pearl have retired; Dr. Kenneth Gruber has gone to work for the National Institute on Dental and Craniofacial Research, and Dr. Chyren Hunter has accepted a position with the National Eye Institute. In addition, Dr. Thomas Getchell, who has been with the NIDCD on a one-year appointment, will soon be leaving the Institute. Dr. Cooper expressed her gratitude to Dr. Getchell for his assistance in managing the taste portfolio over the past several months.
Dr. Cooper introduced Dr. Tom Johnson who recently joined the DHC staff as a Health Scientist Administrator. Dr. Johnson will be working with the Hearing Program and will be responsible for several scientific areas, including genetics of hearing impairment and otitis media.
NIDCD Initiatives
Next, Dr. Cooper described several trans-NIH activities as well as a number of NIDCD initiatives, in which DHC staff are involved. She discussed the progress of several of these initiatives, some of which have evolved into Request for Applications (RFAs), Program Announcements (PAs), contract solicitations, workshops and conferences.
