XVIII. Report of the Hearing Program

Dr. Donahue

Dr. Donahue, Chief of the Hearing and Balance/Vestibular Sciences Branch, DHC, characterized the scope of the hearing program by topic area, basic or clinical scientific discipline, and research mechanism. Approximately 53 percent of the NIDCD budget was expended on hearing research and training in FY 1996. A total of 354 grants were funded at a total cost of $93,087,000.

Percentages of the various types of research and research training awards contained in the hearing program portfolio were compared with the NIDCD total portfolio. Dr. Donahue also included a comparison of the change in scientific discipline representation in the portfolio of the Hearing Program between 1992 and 1996. She also discussed the degrees of the principal investigators affiliated with the various mechanisms. The status of each hearing program initiative in FY 1996 was reviewed, and the FY 1997 Implementation Plan was presented.

Dr. Donahue responded to several questions from Council. A booklet containing copies of the data presented by Dr. Donahue was distributed to Council members.
